About Me

Sharon Tesser

I am a storyteller who shares my tales using cloth as the visual imagery. When people see my work I want them to feel and connect with the story. Through memory and imagination, I create images that tap into our collective humanity. We are all messy edges and frayed seams, using cloth as my palette was a natural choice. Our imperfections and frailty make us uniquely ourselves. I love the paradox that often beauty is found in simplicity. My themes are deceptively simple. I tell stories of joy, passion, peace, walks in the woods and juicy pears on the table. For me these are literally the fiber of who we are and what we are inspired by.

I am a member of The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.

      Through My Eyes

I see the world through a filter of pattern and texture.  Everything about cloth fascinates me. All fabric has a personality to me, the frayed edges and open weaves are my palette of choice. Natural fibers; cotton and silk are used exclusively.  The smallest moments in life are what inspires me the most. When I look back on my own experiences it is the seemingly unimportant instances that strike me as the most profound. Is there anything more extraordinary than a spontaneous kiss, a shared secret, a walk on the beach with the love of your life.....these are the images I sketch and those sketches are the references I use for every piece of art I create.

        career highlights

Traditionally highlights would be listed as prizes and recognition within the arts community. However, while I’m flattered by my many prizes, over time they don’t hold the same weight as those moments in a career that have brought me to tears; the 20 year old that clears out her emergency fund to purchase a piece she had to have, the couple celebrating their 50th anniversary and chose my work in commemoration of their special event, the person who makes a connection with something I’ve created and wants to hang it in their bedroom - these are my highlights. Having art lovers see and desire my work makes being an artist a career filled with highlights.

            My Technique

Beginning with a charcoal sketch I create my images using layers and layers of fabric. I call the process “textile mosaic”. To have the mosaic effect every small piece of cloth sits next to another piece. I use a multi-step archival adhesive applied with a brush. Every piece of cloth is added one at a time. All the fabric is hand cut. The cloth I use is cotton and silk, only natural fibers. Using vintage, recycled and hand dyed fabrics I utilize a variety of pattern size and colors to create light, pattern, depth and texture.
